When is aluminium the best choice?
When a lightweight, formable, and cost-effective material is needed, and corrosion resistance is adequate for the process conditions – for example, in enclosures, protective structures, and applications with low chemical stress. It is also an excellent choice for cryogenic (extremely cold) applications because, unlike steel, aluminium does not become brittle in freezing temperatures; its strength actually increases.
Can aluminium be used in chemical processes?
With limitations and careful consideration. The natural oxide layer forming on the aluminium surface protects it well against weather and water, but it is sensitive to pH changes. It does not withstand strong acids or alkalis, which corrode away the protective layer. Therefore, in industry, we primarily use aluminium for structures (walkways, railings) and in certain neutral process flows, not for transferring aggressive chemicals.
How does welding aluminium differ from steel?
It requires a completely different technique and level of cleanliness. The biggest challenge is heat: aluminium conducts heat away from the weld zone very efficiently, yet the material itself melts at a low temperature (approx. 660°C). Additionally, the surface oxide film only melts at approx. 2000°C. The welder must therefore “break” the oxide film (usually with AC-TIG) without burning through the workpiece. Aluminium is also unforgiving of dirt – even a tiny amount of moisture or grease immediately causes porosity in the seam.

In processes where chloride content, temperature, or chemical aggressiveness rise to high levels, other materials are chosen — but in the right conditions, aluminium is unbeatable in terms of cost and fabricability.
